A Snapshot of Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa

According to the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder that affects about 1% of females and about 1/3rd of that for males. Not only that, but it has the highest mortality rate among mental health disorders. It causes individuals to obsessively fear weight gain and leads to distorted body image and difficulty upholding a weight that is healthy.

With anorexia, there are to two subtypes: the restricting subtype and the binge-eating/purging subtype. You may maintain low body weight if you struggle with the restricting subtype by considerably limiting food intake. For individuals experiencing the binge-eating/purging subtype they will restrict their food intake and routinely engage in binge-eating and/or purging behaviors. These behaviors may include compulsive exercise, abuse of laxatives and diuretics and self-induced vomiting.
