Bulimia Nervosa

According to the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder where an individual regularly has episodes of binge eating. Binge eating occurs when one consumes, in a short period of time, large quantities of food. This is followed by purging to rid themselves of calories. Purging often consists of at least one of the following methods: self-induced vomiting, laxative use or diuretics, insulin misuse, compulsive exercising and diet pills.
Bulimia nervosa is more common that anorexia nervosa. It affects 1-2% of adult women and much less men. It is not uncommon for individuals to have comorbid conditions such as mood and anxiety disorders and impulse control and substance use. While the condition is less lethal than anorexia nervosa, suicide rates among these individuals are higher.
